SANDWICH, MA- Teens Rescued after Being Blown Out to Sea (09-04-10)
A 16 year-old female and 16 year-old male teen were swept out to sea and later rescued off of Town Neck Beach in Sandwich, Massachusetts Saturday (09-04-10) afternoon around 12:00 PM according to a Sandwich fire official at the scene an the mother of the 16 year-old female. According to Sarah Potash (the mother of the 16 year-old girl rescued) of Dedham , Massachusetts , her daughter and a 16 year-old male friend were out in surf kayaks, also known as "yak boards", off of Town Neck Beach when winds pushed them out to sea. A Coast Guard inflatable boat responded to the scene and rescued the teens. The teen's and one of their fathers (who attempted to rescue them in another kayak) were brought to shore and examined and released by EMTs. A Sandwich fire official at the scene estimated that winds were blowing at 20 to 25 miles per hour at the time of the water rescue. One person is dead following a fiery single vehicle accident on Route 28 in South Yarmouth . The accident happened around 12:30 AM Wednesday ( 09-01-10 ) morning. According to emergency broadcast reports and police reports at the scene, a BMW was apparently traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck a utility pole and rolled over into the grounds of a condo complex where the vehicle burst into flames. The sole occupant of the vehicle, reported by police at the scene to be in his 50s, was trapped under the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Power was out in a large section of Route 28 as a result of the crash. An electrical pole was snapped in half as a result of the accident. The roadway has been closed in both directions for several hours while police reconstruct the accident scene and Nstar crews work to restore power. A male driver of the car, reported to be 19 years old. was seriously injured in the accident which happened around 1:00 AM. It took firefighters using the jaws-of-life over 20 minutes to extricate the victim from the overturned vehicle. The victim was taken by Medflight helicopter to Beth Israel Hospital in Boston . Three people were seriously injured in a head-on crash on Pimlico Pond Road in Mashpee , MA Friday (08-20-10) evening around 11:00 PM. According to public safety officials on the scene, one of the victims (a 21 year-old male) sustained potentially life-threatening injuries and was transported by Medflight helicopter. The other two victims (believed to be in their late teens), suffered serious injuries and were transported to local hospitals with a trauma alert. Public safety officials at the scene stated that the driver of a BMW fled the accident scene on foot after hitting a Jeep which was carrying the three accident victims head-on. A portion of the roadway was closed for nearly two hours as police reconstructed the scene and searched for the driver who fled the accident on foot. FALMOUTH, MA- A car crashed into a house at 224 Trotting Park Road in Falmouth, Massachusetts early Friday (08-20-10) morning following a reported police pursuit. A Mercedes driven by a male operator crashed into the side of a house and garage causing extensive damage to the occupied home. The driver subsequently fled the scene and is currently at large. There were no reported injuries to the occupants of the house. OSTERVILLE, Mass. -- A group of endangered sea turtles are headed home. Eighteen turtles were released into the ocean at a beach in Osterville. The turtles came to the New England Aquarium over the last three years with severe health problems. Officials say they likely would have died on their own. WEST BARNSTABLE — State and Barnstable police and members of the Barnstable County Sheriff's Department are searching the woods area near the power lines off the Service Road in West Barnstable and Sandwich this morning. The large-scale search — that includes about 30 people and a state police helicopter — is connected to the investigation into the disappearance of Trudie Hall, 23, the Nantucket woman who has been missing for almost two weeks. Two police officers were seen at about 11:20 am coming out of a wooded area on Crooked Cart Way in West Barnstable carrying a brown bag, the type that is commonly used in evidence collection. Several canine teams are scouring a wooded area off the Service Road between Route 6 exits 3 and 5. Members of the West Barnstable Fire Department are also on the scene along with the Red Cross, which is providing water and other supplies for the searchers. Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O'Keefe arrived at the scene at about 10:30 am and was seen talking with investigators. He would not comment about the search saying he will make a statement when "it's appropriate." Investigators have been searching the area for about two hours, according to a source at the scene. Vivienne Walker reported her daughter missing on July 28 after trying unsuccessfully to reach her by telephone all day. New Bedford, MA- An 86-year-old woman was recovering Saturday morning after being rescued by a man from her submerged car at a New Bedford marina. Police said the woman was driving her Buick Century along Huttleston Avenue at about 10:00 am when she drove off the road and into the water off Pope's Island Marina. Authorities said John Conley, of Barrington, Rhode Island, and Chris Paul saw the accident and dove into the water to help. "We heard yells and we looked around the corner and saw a car floating," said Paul. "I had a mask, I had fins on the boat so I ran up the dock, ran over to the boat grabbed the mask and got in the water," said Conley. The elderly driver was trapped behind the wheel. Conley broke the women's rear window to get at her while Paul ripped away the glass. Paul cut his hand in the process. "I thought I saw her last breath," said Paul. "We were face to face. It was just horrifying." After three attempts of going under water, Conley realized the driver's window was open and was able to pull the woman from her car. "I dove down three times and the third time I had her by the arm and she popped out," said Conley. Spitting up water, the woman was transported to St. Luke's Hospital where her daughter Jill Simmons said she was in good condition. The woman's car was later pulled out of the water with a crane. Ironically, a dive team specialist herself, Simmons later visited the scene and thanked the men who saved her mother. "Somebody gives you a life back ... CENTERVILLE - Police today removed a motorcycle and a Nissan Armada from a home of a man who reportedly knows Trudie Hall, a Nantucket woman missing for the past week. The vehicles, along with several brown bags commonly used to collect evidence, were removed from the house at 259 Great Marsh Road during a search that began shortly before midnight. By early this afternoon, the police had left the scene. Law enforcement sources not directly associated with the investigation confirmed that police are interested in Quoizel Wilson, a resident and town-listed co-owner of the house. Wilson, according to sources, knows Hall, the 23-year-old Nantucket woman who has been missing for a week. He is one of several people listed as a "friend" on her Facebook page. Wilson has not been identified as a suspect in the case, according to police sources. Wilson left the Barnstable police station this afternoon and got into a cab. What he had been doing there or how long he had been at the station is unknown. Police are not commenting at this point. Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O'Keefe had no comment this morning. A procession of investigators could be seen going into and out of the home. Shortly after noon police erected a white canopy over a white Nissan Armada parked in the driveway of the house and they began searching the inside of the vehicle. BOURNE - Three people sustained life-threatening injuries following a one-vehicle accident on Route 25 this afternoon, according to the state police. A 1995 Ford Econoline van was traveling eastbound one mile from the Bourne Bridge when the driver lost control of the vehicle. It rolled over and came to rest in the median, ejecting two occupants and trapping the third inside the van, the state police said. Of the two people ejected, one landed in the eastbound lane and the other on the westbound side of the highway. The victim inside the car had to be "freed by mechanical means," the state police said. No other drivers were injured, police said. All three men were seriously injured and taken to Toby and Falmouth hospitals. The police have no further word on their conditions. Route 25 was closed for a time following the accident, but was partially reopened by 1:50 pm with the left lane closed in each direction. Area traffic was snarled. Not the words Josh Adams, a youth pastor at Cape Cod Church in East Falmouth, expected to hear on a plane trip around the Cape yesterday to videotape the coastline for an upcoming sermon. But those words came from pilot Michael Keeling, a parishioner at the Falmouth church, just minutes before their single-engine aircraft made an emergency water landing a few hundred yards off South Cape Beach around noon yesterday. When the engine began failing, Keeling warned Adams to get ready for a crash landing. "I was freaking out," Adams said. Adams said it was Keeling's quick thinking and cool demeanor that saved the men from injury. "He told me, 'You better brace for a crash landing.' ... But he was calm the whole way down." Small plane crashes in Mashpee With his decision to land the plane in the water, Keeling apparently averted what could have been a more serious crash. "It could have been a lot worse," Mashpee Fire Chief George Baker said. Keeling and Adams bounced around in the cockpit, Adams said, but they were able to exit the plane through the passenger-side door. Lifeguards quickly swam out to help the men, but they were able to swim to shore, according to witnesses. Neither man sustained injuries in the splashdown. ONSET — Three people, including two children, were rescued after their seaplane crashed in the Cape Cod Canal late yesterday afternoon, according to public safety officials. The three people on the plane declined medical treatment and were not taken to the hospital, fire officials said. The man who was piloting the plane and two passengers, both young boys, were taken to shore by the US Army Corps of Engineers, Bourne fire Lt. Penny Fusco said. The trio were quickly rescued from the downed seaplane, according to Connie Terrell, a Coast Guard public affairs officer. The Corps of Engineers said that the plane landed in the canal and then crashed after trying to take off again, Terrell said. The crash occurred at the western end of the Cape Cod Canal near the entrance channel to Buttermilk Bay, Terrell said. The plane went down just before 5 pm in the area of Buzzards Bay west of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. The plane remained under the water last night about one-third of a mile from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Bourne Deputy Fire Chief Joe Carrara said. But Fusco said work crews hoped to use a crane to bring the aircraft to shore late last night at the Maritime Academy. BARNSTABLE -- A team of state and local police officers resumed their search at dawn today looking through the woods and fields off Independence Drive for signs of a missing Nantucket woman. Trudie Hall, 23, of Nantucket, was reported missing Thursday. The Barnstable police recovered a rented Toyota Avalon yesterday in connection with the case. They would not say where they found it. Police examined the vehicle for evidence behind the Barnstable Police Station yesterday. A state police helicopter also began searching the area around noon today. More than 10 police officers from Barnstable and the state, as well as more than one police dog, started at 5 am searching beneath the power lines near the end of Independence Drive, by Mary Dunn Road. They also searched an area off Hathaway's Pond and a section of woods at the end of the commuter lot off Route 132 in Barnstable by the Burger King Restaurant. The police dispersed, apparently ending their search, just after 10:30 am Cape & Islands District Attorney Michael O'Keefe would only say the detectives who work for his office "are investigating a missing person." PLYMOUTH — An elderly woman was not hurt when she backed her Toyota Corolla through the wall of a liquor store, Plymouth police said. The car was parked outside the store when the woman got in and started the engine. The car lurched backward into the side of Luke's Liquors at 736 State Road at about 8:30 am Thursday. The car ended up with its rear half in the store's can and bottle redemption center. Nobody was in that section of the store at the time. "I thought a plane hit the building. It was that loud," Patricia O'Donnell, assistant store manager said. "I ran outside and saw the side of the building. She was half in and half out." O'Donnell and a woman who had been passing by helped the driver out of the car. "I was trying to get her out and dial 911 at the same time. I smelled gas and didn't know if it was coming from the car," she said. The elderly woman had been her first customer of the day, O'Donnell said. A Nantucket Shuttle Airlines plane experienced problems this morning with its landing gear at Barnstable Municipal Airport today causing it to land on its belly. Osterville, MA (Cape Cod) Ten of the world's most endangered sea turtles will be released off of a Cape Cod beach early Wednesday morning. These juvenile Kemp's Ridleys are the world's most endangered sea turtles and are the sea turtle species most affected by the Gulf oil spill. These turtles were all found on Cape Cod beaches last fall, severely hypothermic and near death and were then rescued by the staff and volunteers of the Massachusetts Audubon Sanctuary at Wellfleet Bay . They were brought to the New England Aquarium for months of life-saving medical care. Among these ten turtles are Tupelo , Yosemite, Alcatraz , all named after national parks or monuments. They are now ready for release and will spend the remainder of the summer feeding on crabs south of the Cape before beginning their migration in the autumn. Eight sea turtles are still finishing their release at the Aquarium, and they will be released in mid to late August. Stewart's retrial is scheduled tomorrow in Barnstable Superior Court. Stewart was convicted of Frances Carriere's murder in 2005, but the state Supreme Judicial Court overturned the verdict last year, and the new trial is scheduled to begin this week. Frances Carriere was stabbed multiple times, at least once through the heart. EASTHAM -- The body of a 60-year-old part-time Orleans man was found this morning in the water off Coast Guard Beach. Donald Holborn, 60, was recovered this morning after his boat ran aground with the engine running and no one on board, according to a press release from Eastham police. A rescue effort ensued that involved local public safety on ATVs, as well as a Coast Guard helicopter and Falcon jet. The rescue effort started shortly after 9:30 am At around 11 am, Holborn's body was spotted by the Coast Guard helicopter and a rescue swimmer pulled him out of the water onto a boat. Bystanders on the beach said there was heavy fog and surf this morning, according to a Times photographer on the scene. The accident is under investigation by state and local police. BOURNE -- A crash shortly before 10 this morning sent two women to hospitals with serious injuries, and shut down Route 25 right before the Bourne Bridge for an hour. The road re-opened at 11 am, according to State Police Lt. Dave Wilson, after a Boston MedFlight helicopter had landed on the highway and taken one of the victims to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, said Bourne Fire Deputy Chief Martin Greene. The other victim was sent by ambulance to Tobey Hospital. The accident occurred at 9:50 am when the driver of a Nissan Sentra heading eastbound onto Cape Cod crossed over the median strip of the highway and struck a Jeep head-on, Wilson said. Police have no explanation for why the driver of the Nissan crossed into the wrong lane at this time, Wilson said. The Nissan landed on its roof and the driver was trapped inside. Firefighters used hydraulic tools to get her out of the car, Greene said. No one else was in the vehicles. Police would not release the victims names at this time, Wilson said.
